Proko-Five Composition Prize

Bass Forward is pleased to announce its 2017 Proko-Five Composition Prize. The competition is for the best new 5-7 minute work for same instrumentation as Prokofiev’s Quintet in G minor, op. 39: oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, and double bass.


Items must be received by February 17th, 2017

– A PDF file of the full score

– An MP3 audio recording of digital instruments.

– $15 entrance fee in the form of a tax-deductible donation to Bass Forward through its 501(c)3 sponsor “Fractured Atlas”

The MP3, PDF, and the Donation ID number that verifies the entrance fee should be emailed to After you submit your entrance fee in the form of a donation to Bass Forward, you will receive a thank you email which contains the “Donation ID” number at the bottom.

The prize is $400 USD, and a premier performance at the International Society of Bassists’ 2017 Convention at Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY. *

First week of June: premier in Ithaca*

Bass forward is unable to pay for travel or lodging to the International Society of Bassists’ 2017 Convention.

Submitted scores and recordings will become the property of Bass Forward, although the winner will retain all rights to the composition after the premier.


Bass Forward reserves the right to not award a prize.

*The premier in Ithaca is contingent upon recital approval from the International Society of Bassists. We expect approval in mid January, after their first board meeting. Should we not get approval, the premier will take place at the University of California at Irvine.
